Sun Peaks Resort shortlisted for Most Improved Resort in North America and The Eco Award in 2014 World Snow Awards
Sun Peaks Resort is vying for Most Improved Resort North America and The Eco Award in the upcoming 2014 World Snow Awards surrounding The Telegraph Ski and Snowboard Show London (UK). Now in its third year, the awards honour the best resorts, tour operators, fashion brands and individuals across 24 categories.
The resort is in good company in both categories, competing with well-known industry heavy weights such as Whistler, Jackson Hole, Steamboat, Big Sky and Breckenridge. Also, both categories Sun Peaks has been shortlisted for are judged by an expert panel of industry leading figures.
“To be recognized for these recent efforts is a testament to the scale and level of investment and resources these projects have required,” says Aidan Kelly, director of sales and marketing for Sun Peaks Resort Corporation. “And to share the nomination with such high caliber resorts speaks to the fact Sun Peaks is truly a world class destination.”
Reasons for Sun Peaks’ most improved nomination include both its recent alpine and Nordic trail development. Over 500 acres of new, challenging alpine ski terrain will be added to the Sun Peaks ski boundary area this winter. Already the second largest ski area in British Columbia, Sun Peaks will now be the second largest in Canada with 4,270 acres of in-bound ski terrain. Sun Peaks is also improving its cross country ski network with the addition of a new beginner trail, ‘Whiskey Jack’, creating a directional loop complementing their most popular existing trail, ‘McGillivray Lake’. This loop will not only expand the beginner terrain, but will also increase the amount of trail dogs that are allowed on.
The Eco Award nomination stems from Sun Peaks Resort’s ongoing Forest Health Program which was developed and implemented to manage the mountain pine beetle epidemic. Not only does this program create a healthier and less vulnerable forest, it safeguards the habitat used by the abundant and diverse flora and fauna which call the resort area home. This program also improves guest experience by reducing blown down trees, controlling aesthetics, preserving wildlife and most directly, by creating new ski terrain in areas that were previously either deteriorating due to the bark beetles or too dense to descend.
