Whistler’s Great Outdoors Festival will present AlpenGlow, a family-friendly fun run taking place at 8pm on Saturday, May 17, 2014 in Whistler Village and Lost Lake Park.
Runners are encouraged to light up the night with brightly-coloured clothing, face paint and anything – and everything – glow-in-the-dark.
This mass participation run isn’t a race, it is a radiant adventure where participants can run, walk, skip and dance their way through Whistler Village and into the illuminated forest trails circling Lost Lake. At just under seven kilometres this glowing excursion is a great warm up for the summer season’s more serious running races, and an entertaining and uncompetitive introduction to organized running events.
One of Whistler’s favourite DJs, go-go legend Foxy Moron, will provide funky beats for the entire run, which will be broadcasted live on radio station Whistler FM. Whistler’s lululemon store will bring additional energy and animate AlpenGlow with cheer stations where runners can catch their breath, get some support and hydration, or just stop to enjoy interactive displays.
After the race The Boom Booms will welcome back AlpenGlow runners back to Whistler Village and share their happy vibes on the GO Fest main stage in Village Square during a free, live concert from 9 to 10pm. The Boom Booms’ unique brand of joyously raucous music will be the perfect close to AlpenGlow.
Registration fees for the first 500 people are $20 per individual and $15 per person for families, or groups, of four or more. After that fees are $25 per individual and $20 for groups. Other family-friendly, outdoor adventure events on the GO Fest calendar from May 16-19 include GO Enduro, a mountain bike race in the Whistler Mountain Bike Park; a disc golf tournament called DiscGO; the inclusion of the Whistler 5 On 5 Ultimate Frisbee tournament; The Great Slush Cup, the ultimate spring skiing/snowboarding adventure on Whistler Blackcomb; The Great Snow-Earth Water relay race; and a rafting adventure for all levels of ability called the Great Green River Challenge.
May is one of the best months of the year to participate in all the activities that make Whistler an amazing destination, and GO Fest’s four-day schedule of active, family-friendly programming celebrates Whistler’s great outdoors and the convergence of winter and summer recreation activities.
GO Fest is an initiative of the Resort Municipality of Whistler (RMOW) and is funded through the Province of British Columbia’s Resort Municipality Initiative. GO Fest is part of the RMOW’s Festivals, Events and Animation program, and is one component of the larger May Long Weekend strategy.
