The Canadian Freestyle Ski Association is offering a new freestyle-specific module to help coaches recognize signs of concussion.

The online coaching module, part of the Public Health Agency of Canada’s Active and Safe Initiative, is called Making Head Way in Freestyle Ski and is being offered free of charge to all CFSA coaches for a limited time in advance of the coming competitive season.

“The importance of understanding concussion as a freestyle ski coach at any level cannot be understated,” says Coach and Performance Program Manager Julie Steggall. “Concussion and brain-related injuries have been making headlines as of late because of the serious implications undiagnosed concussions and improper return to play protocols can have on the long term well-being of an athlete. Making Head Way in Freestyle Ski is a designed to help coaches gain the knowledge and skills required to ensure the safety of their athletes.”

The program covers: what to do to prevent concussions; how to recognize the signs and symptoms of a concussion; what to do when you suspect an athlete has a concussion; and, how to ensure athletes return to play safely.
