Calgary, Alta. (February 27, 2016) – The Canada Ski Cross Team was in PyeongChang, Korea for the first ski cross test event ahead of the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games. Athletes raced on a track with massive air and big features making for an exciting race.
Kelsey Serwa, a Kelowna, B.C. native, came away with a second-place finish, bringing this season’s World Cup podium tally to two. Serwa battled it out heat after heat today, making exciting passes and advancing through with photo-finish endings.
“It feels great and I’m happy to be back on the podium! I wanted to finish the season strong and I’m really happy with today’s race. I raced smart and had fun,” said Serwa. “It’s been helpful to race here and help me build confidence for the next time we’re back in 2018.”
Whistler, B.C.’s Marielle Thompson, dominated in every heat today, leading by huge lengths until the final round where she clipped a ski causing her to crash through the finish line for a fourth-place finish.
On the men’s side, Kevin Drury from Toronto, Ont., a Next Gen member of the Canada Ski Cross Team, had a career-best finish with an impressive fourth-place result. This is Drury’s eighth World Cup start showing steady improvement throughout the season.
“It feels pretty good to make my first final on the World Cup circuit! It was a rough first heat with some good tangle ups but luckily I got through,” said Drury of his performance today. “Through the rest of the rounds, I went with my game plan and it worked out for me.”
Louis-Pierre Hélie from Berthierville, Que., had another great personal finish qualifying into the small finals and ending with an eighth-place finish.
The Canada Ski Cross Team heads to Arosa, Switzerland for the final World Cup race of the season, sitting in first-place in the overall Nations’ Cup.
